JENNIE WADE HOUSE

HISTORY

"If there is anyone in this house that is to be killed today, I hope it is me, as Georgia has a little baby." Jennie Wade

Those words would come back to haunt Jennie.  Jennie Wade, 20 years old, engaged to Union Sgt. Jack Skelly, was the only civilian killed during the Battle of Gettysburg.  July 3, 1863, Jennie was baking bread for the soldiers in her sister's kitchen, when she was shot through two wooden doors.  The only way of escape for the survivors was on the second floor of the house.  Soldiers broke down a wall separating Jennie's sister's house and the house next door.  Jennie's body was carried by soldiers to the second floor, through the broken wall, and down to the cellar.  Her fiance, Jack Skelly, was later killed in battle.  For more information on Jennie click here.

Jennie is buried at Evergreen Cemetery on Cemetery Hill in Gettysburg.  A flag flies 24 hours a day at her grave site. The only other woman who shares this distinction is Betsy Ross in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

CLAIMS

The smell of bread baking, cigar smoke, and roses are experienced.  Ectoplasm and orbs found in photos, guests overcome with emotion, and chains and ropes used to section off areas of the house are seen swinging.  The spirit of Jennie Wade and her father are sometimes seen.  Batteries draining in the cellar is a claim.  My camera batteries did go dead in the cellar and it was fully charged.

There is a ghost tour that offers an investigation at night at the Jennie Wade House.  Inquire in the gift shop.  In the cellar of the house is a room full of paranormal photos and stories.

We did not have the chance to do an "investigation" of the house but we did take the tour of the house which is partially self-guided.  Cost is reasonable.  There are claims of batteries being drained in the basement.  The batteries of my camera did go dead while we were in the basement and I had just charged them that morning.  You will find the Jennie Wade House in downtown Gettysburg, 548 Baltimore Street.  There is a statue of Jennie in front of the house.

We do not claim to be experts of the paranormal.  Any video, audio, photo, statement on this site is our opinion.
